MOVING CHECKLIST

MOST IMPORTANT
_____ Contact APARTMENT STOP LOCATORS in Houston; call 281/890-3888 or 1-888-890-3888 and let us know you have leased. Fill out the rebate form to claim your money.
_____ Begin getting estimates from moving companies. Find out what expenses will be paid by your company.
4 WEEKS
_____ Check the pre-registration procedures enrolling your children in school. Get school transcripts and a list of textbooks used; find out which grading method was employed and get a statement from the teacher describing the student's achievement level, interests, and any other possible helpful notes. It may also be wise to get a description of any unusual courses students have completed.
_____ Call for copies of all medical and veterinary records and birth certificates to be sent to your new home.
_____ Notify the post office of your new address and send a change of address card to friends, subscriptions services, credit card companies (creditors), the Department of Motor Vehicles, and insurance companies.
_____ If you are packing your own belongings, begin packing seldom used items. Give charities your unwanted items and get a signed receipt for tax purposes.
_____ Contact the IRS for forms and regulations concerning tax-deductible moving expenses. Also give them a change of address. (Note: Refund checks after you file will never be forwarded unless you contact your postman directly!)
3 WEEKS
_____ Arrange to have appliances, utilities, newspaper, laundry, and phone disconnected and check on deposits. Set up for service connections at your new home.
_____ Make travel arrangements for trip.
2 WEEKS
_____ Handle bills, stocks, investments, and banking transfers (Note: Branch banking is legal in Texas).
_____ Make special arrangements for transporting pets and plants. Some plants cannot be transported across state lines - check with your moving company.
_____ Clean cupboards.
_____ Plan remaining meals so you may pack what you don't' need.
_____ Plan for foodstuffs and medications you may want to need to take with you on your trip. Renew any prescriptions that may expire before you locate a new family doctor.
1 WEEK
_____ Discontinue any delivery services, such as the newspaper.
_____ Set aside one day to clean and sort items in the garage and attic, returning borrowed tools and getting back those you have loaned. Pack whatever you do not wasn't to leave for the mover to pack.
_____ Clean out your safety deposit box and place all valuables and documents together. Either carry them with you or send them ahead by Railway Express or registered insured mail.
2 DAYS
_____ Defrost and dry refrigerators and freezers to be moved. Arrange for cash / travelers checks for trip expenses and payment to the mover on delivery.
_____ Reconcile bank account(s) and close it (them) if it is not at a bank that is in the area you are moving to.
_____ Conclude any financial matters relating to your lease or sale of home.
_____ Have movers pack goods.
_____ Pack luggage. Put aside those items you will need immediately after the move; a few dishes, several pots and pans, towels, a bar of soap, bedding, a few light bulbs, flashlights, toilet paper, etc.
_____ Leave forwarding address with new tenant and previous landlord.
MOVING DAY
_____ Reconfirm your delivery date with your mover and provide directions to your new residence.
_____ Pay close attention to the paperwork. You will be asked to sign it on completion of loading.
_____ Plan to carefully supervise the movers and be sure your instructions are understood.
_____ Double-check the entire grounds before leaving.
